This controversial film is based on Zeromski’s novel, the remarkable story of a young girl, in love with a married man. The book was considered highly scandalous in its day, one-hundred-years-ago. The film surprises the viewer with its cinematographic artistry and wonderfully replicated feeling for that era. The heroine, Ewa, comes from a poor noble family, and for some time, she has carried on an affair with Lukasz, who rents a room in her mother’s home. When Lukasz fails to get a divorce, he leaves Ewa and disappears. She, however, cannot forget this great love. She learns of his possible whereabouts and decides to follow in his trail.
The film received a Golden Palm nomination at the Cannes Festival in 1975.
Digitally remastered in 2011.
WALERIAN BOROWCZYK
Born in 1923 in Kwilcz. Studied at The Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. Trained as a painter and lithographer, winning Poland’s National Prize in 1953. Died in 2003 in Paris. He began his film career as a film poster designer, and then started making short animated films in the late 1950s. Moving to France in the early 1960s, he gained a reputation as a leading animator before switching to live-action features, which have become increasingly controversial due to their explicitly erotic and sensational content.
