September of 1939. The Polish Ulan squadron receives a beautiful, white mare – Lotna. They establish an order of who gets to ride her. The Ulan’s commander, Cavalry Captain Chodakiewicz, receives Lotna first. From then on the tragic fate of the squadron and the beautiful horse is connected…

Born in 1926 in Suwałki. Studied Painting at the Fine Arts Academy in Cracow (1946-50), graduated from the Film Directing at the National Film School in Łódź (1960). Head of “X” Film Studio (1972-83), president of Polish Filmmakers’ Association (1973-83), director of Teatr Powszechny in Warsaw (1989-90). Senator of the Republic of Poland (1989-91). Member of the Institut de France – Academia des Beaux-Arts, BAFTA, European Film Academy and America Film Academy. Recipient of hundreds of film awards for lifetime achievements. In 2000 he received an Oscar as the Honorary Award for five decades of extraordinary film direction. He was nominated for the Academy Award for the best foreign film four times. Awarded honorary degrees at numerous universities, including Washington, Bologna, Cracow, Warsaw, Moscow and Gdańsk, as well as Fine Arts Academy in Warsaw, National Film School in Łódź and WGIK in Moscow. Honorary citizen of many Polish cities. Founder of the Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing in Warsaw.
