RZECZPOSPOLITA ZAKOPIAŃSKA

W Zakopanem, podobnie jak w innych częściach Polski pod zaborami, ludzie czekali na możliwość ogłoszenia niepodległości. 13 października 1918 r. odbyło się zgromadzenie obywatelskie. Pięciuset uczestników wybrało 32-osobową komisję pod kierownictwem Stefana Żeromskiego. 31 października, zaledwie dzień przed Krakowem, Zakopane ogłosiło niepodległość. Utworzono Wspólnotę Zakopiańską, której prezesem został Stefan Żeromski. Zakopane stało się pierwszą częścią niepodległej Polski.

In Zakopane, as in other parts of Poland during the partitions, people awaited the opportunity to declare independence. On October 13, 1918, a civic assembly was held; its five hundred participants chose a 32-member committee, headed by the writer Stefan Żeromski. On October 31, one day ahead of Kraków, Zakopane declared independence. The Commonwealth of Zakopane was established with Stefan Żeromski the president, making Zakopane the first part of an independent Poland.
